Happy Birthday Rival Angels! Rival Angels turns 2 today! How have you liked the story so far? Any favorite moments you’ve enjoyed in the last year? And what do you think it going to happen in Year 3? I know a few of you have been around since near the beginning and I really appreciate it. 🙂
The way this match was going, it was only a matter of time before things turned ugly. Xtina was already living up to her ‘hairpulling’ billing. The fans are enjoying all of the rough action but the intensity of the competitors has boiled over into the first real shady move of the match. According to Wikipedia, a rabbit punch is a blow to the neck or to the base of the skull. It is considered especially dangerous because it can damage the cervical vertebrae and subsequently the spinal cord, which may lead to serious spinal cord injury or even death. If this were MMA, Sabrina would be given time to recover, but that’s not going to happen here because this is pro wrestling. Xtina receives a warning to her dismay. In many sports, veterans enjoy a certain bit of leeway and that’s what Xtina is getting instead of getting DQ’d. Match continues.

That rabbit punch panel looked like Xtina literally murdered Sabrina, I was like, wtf just happened? Scared me for a second, hehe. Happy birthday to Rival Angels and here’s to many more. Congratulations on 2 years of an awesome comic.
First off Happy Birthday!!!! and here is to many more great comic and years to come. Favorite moment of this year has to be current story arc, I have really enjoyed the character development that has occurred, combine with the current action has created some big bangs to really end the year. Prediction for year three, I would say the upcoming PPV has to a major game changer for RA universe, like any PPV or major comic event (Final Crisis), whether for the good or the worst is what I am waiting for. This fight had no where to good be rough and its looks like it is Sabrina turn to be on the receiving end, but Xtina might want to check to her temper to unless she wants to get DQed. I am sure Sun has some interesting comments about the fight, especially if certain members Damage Inc are still running there mouths.
Happy birthday Rival Angels, and damn that rabbit punch is ridiculous that should be an automatic DQ. Real faces wouldn’t stoop that low.

Xtina certainly did put the bitch back in her kennel; at least temporarily. Sabrina will probably come out on top but maybe she’ll learn when you fly off the handle bad things can happen.
2 years of consistent updates, 3 color pages a week; that’s a big accomplishment! Congratulations!
Good action in this latest ep. I like it when the heroines get their lumps, and Xtina really dealt it out…albeit wrongly. I predict more back and forth with the action escalating until Sabrina pulls out a triumph. See if I’m wrong.

jabberwocky, I’m thrilled to hear that you’re enjoying this chapter and match so much! W00t! It should be fun to see Sun again. 😉 Xtina is really pushing the boundaries of what she can get away with so I don’t think she’ll get caught doing that again. And I really think you’re going to enjoy the PPV.
RAWF, normally it would be a auto-DQ but the ref is giving both ladies some leeway and Xtina’s got some cred built up where she can occasionally get away with something like that. Sort of like when LeBron can get away with that extra hop, or when Terell Owens gets away with a push.
MGC, I don’t have the latest RAW vs Smackdown. XD It’s up in the air if Xtina is going heel, but she knows she has it pretty good as a face. T-shirt sales are usually higher for faces as well as the popularity. Xtina is a vet and she knows what she’s doing. What’s a mirror match?
Thanks, Picky! Sabrina’s down and in a bad way. You can kind of see that Xtina is a bit remorseful as she’s not instantly attacking Sabrina. A good question for Sabrina (and everyone) is if Xtina would have resorted to the rabbit punch if Sabrina were more ‘cordially’ fighting?

Prestwick, the momentum is completely shut down. Sabrina’s out of it and Xtina’s trying to justify what she did. An ugly turn, as it were.

usually used as a phrase.. is like a draw bouts. is like they’re facing themselves in the ring..
I kinda see here.. Sabrina hits, then Xtina hits back.. kinda like see-saw.. so I could say, a mirror match..

Ah! Okay…well, I do see this as sort of a mirror match. They’re both pretty much going back and forth, though both girls aren’t a mirror of themselves. Xtina’s a submissions expert and Sabrina’s a high flyer.
yeah clearly this ref is on brina’s side!!! hair pulls, closed fists, attacking poor Xtina outside the ring. is the ref anywhere to be seen? NOOOOO. but one little illegal life threatening shot from Xtina and poof “summon:ref” for the DQ threat. how can Xtina possibly compete with this sort of double standard stacked deck against her? Even she realizes her predicament in the final panel shrugging her shoudlers in helpless despair knowing that if she’ll so much as accidently scratch Brina wither her thumbnail while executing an armbar she’ll be DQed out of the tourney!!!! Is that Dangerous Danny Nick Patrick Davis reffing here or something? ;P
can’t way to see Sun’s conniption in the next update in reaction to this cheap shot. though Xtina’s just fighting fire with fire in my opinion- she just has more fuel/experience with which to start her fires with than Brina does. like you said, had the two started exchanign wristlocks and armbars to start off i don;t think Xtina would be resorting to this. Xtina seems willing to roll with whatever style her opponent is playing until she can take control and do things her way.
It’s entertainment first, competition/sport second in wrestling. I don’t think Sabrina’s had it easy coming out and going while simply because the ref has been obsolete up until now, but I haven’t seen Sabrina do anything necessarily “wrong.” Thus far.
I mean seriously, how many times has Triple H, Stone Cold, etc did worse as a face in WWF/WWE? 9 out of 10 times Austin flipped out on heels and faces yet he was usually considered a face 90% of the time. Look at Triple H, how many times has he gotten out the “hammer” as a face. Randy Orton, Batista, the list goes on.
Just because Brina went off and did a move outside the ring which has been done by many faces, doesn’t mean she’s getting off easy by the ref. It’s obvious with the dialogue Xtina pulled a cheap move and got caught. I haven’t seen Sabrina do that…so far she’s just been brawling rather than wrestling.
just because they get cheered for it doesn’t mean the move itself is legal though. HHH and Austin did pretty much the same thing whether they were heels or face, was just who they did it to that decided if they were getting cheered or not.
besides the entire first paragraph was done heel commentator-tongue in cheek mode anyway. thus the little tongue sticking out emote at the end of it.
LOL jpiv, at the Danny Davis comment. Man, it’s been a while since he last showed up. Maybe he’ll come back with Bret Hart. XD The thing with Xtina is that she knew what that rabbit punch would do but it was a bit of a desperation move. While she is a face and would probably admit to not being proud of that move at the time, she’d probably still do it again especially with so much on the line. That’s actually a really good point about HHH and Stone Cold essentially using the same persona but depending on who they were feuding with, would determine if they were face or not.
Roy, I agree with you that while Sabrina’s been very aggressive, she’s not been rule breaking per se. Hairpulling is a staple of women’s wrestling. XD The rabbit punch was a game changer and while Xtina knew enough to measure her blow, her, the fans and the ref know that it was a shortcut and the ref’s there to remind us all of it. Basically, this match is not between two friendly, cheerful rivals. It’s a fight that’s getting uglier with every update! Any chance these two have a drink after the match to put things behind them?
Come on, Sabrina! One hit isn’t going to take you down. Get up and keep kicking her ass! (I feel like I’m in the freakin’ crowd!)

That was pretty brutal, just looking at the panel I thought X was snapping Sabrina’s neck. Looking at real life neck injuries in wrestling and other sports, that is particularly dirty as it would risk the career and health of your opponent. I suppose Xtina will follow it up with some suplexes or something else to target the neck.
The sad thing is that the personal issue here is either fictional or blown out of proportion, so there’s no real reason for the extra violence. But it is wrestling after all.
Trevor, you just can’t help but get swept up in it. XD Sabrina wants to get up, but it’s a question of whether or not Xtina will let her.

Ken, these girls aren’t playing around! The rabbit punch was outlawed because of it’s potential lethalness and while Xtina’s a professional, it was still a dangerous move. You make a great point that things didn’t have to be so ugly between these two ladies but yeah, there it is.

Stupid question and / or annoyance: So, Xtina, being a veteran, can cheat but Sabina, a rookie, cannot? An illegal move is usually illegal, or always illegal? It’s bullshit like this that makes Washington the clown capital of the world. Hey, here’s this super-great health care reform, you’ll love it! Oh, WE won’t be using it, just you people… Bastards! Now where’s my goddamn chill pills…
Favorites parts so far> Definitely the four-way upstart brawl. And Sabrina nearly ripping Brooke’s head off after she found out about Vincent (I would have preferred Brooke giving a little blood donation, but Sabrina had to handle it her way). By the way, is he out of the hospital yet? Um, Brooke’s outfit’s are in the top ten… sigh, globes warming… Oh, yeah, and coming up with the definition of “Brooked.”
Your portrayal of the action is really good – I’m not an expert, so I don’t know who to compare you to, but your art is really good. Sorry about using “really good” all the time. Guess I need to increase my vocabulary…
Happy second birthday, RA! It’s hard for me to pick favorite moments, so I’ll just say that this is the comic that got me interested in wrestling. But I’ve loved the interplay of the characters and the high-octane action. And the women in tight outfits, those are nice too… <_< >_> Cookie, anyone?
Thanks for reading, Ghost Eraser! 😀 The ref has been lenient this match with the hairpulling, outside the ring fighting and general rough housing but he can’t let the rabbit punch go. Too dangerous. Now that Xtina’s got the upper hand, she’s less likely to use any more questionable moves, at least until she’s at a disadvantage again. Maybe Sabrina will retaliate in kind? Hey, those are some awesome favorites of yours! Very cool, and I believe there might be a Vincent sighting next chapter. 😉 In the recovery wing, maybe? I’ll take ‘really good’ as a compliment. 🙂

Excellent match so far! Xtina’s experience and effectiveness are apparent so far in the fact she’s literally beaten Sabrina to the punch. I love Sun’s interest in the match the last page or so. The sound effects are very well captured from the crowd chants to the contact of each blow! The action from page to page is certainly fantastic. You’ve definitely found a way to end and start the new year for me! Happy New Year to you, Albone, and the rest of the Rival Angels fanbase!
Well, I just read two and a half year’s worth of Shadow Girls to figure out who was drinking with Sabrina. Damn, that’s some good stuff there. Thanks for cluing me in on them, Albone!
You said the ref can’t let the rabbit punch go, but he did. There is no consequence for Xtina’s action. If a cop pulls you over for speeding and lets you off with a warning, what’s the draw back, other than the additional time you’ve had to sit on the side of the road? What is Xtina’s penalty? That she has to say she’s sorry?
