If you're new here, you may want to bookmark Rival Angels and/or subscribe to my RSS feed. Rival Angels updates every M-W-F. Thanks for visiting!

Before this weekend’s C2E2 show, I wanted to share some awesome pictures for you. At Anime Milwaukee, I got my very own Rival Angels plushies! I’m not one to use the word ‘adorable’ but I think it’s the right word for it here. These wonderful plushies of Sabrina, Sun, Krystin and Brooke were done by the awesome and talented SnowTigra and you can find her at her store,  and her deviantart page.

And if you’re going to be at C2E2 this weekend, here’s a sampling of some of the stuff I’m going to have for you:

A couple of weeks ago, Caytlin from Walking on Broken Glass webcomic was doing commissions so I had to have her do one of the Upstart Girls and I picked Sabrina! Pretty sweet, eh? If you’ve never checked out the webcomic before, I encourage you to check it out for the strong characters and fun story. You’ll be glad you did.

Leva-SHIMMER

A couple times a year, you’ll see me talk about going to SHIMMER in Berwyn, Ill and how it is the very best woman’s wrestling this side of the Atlantic. Not only is it 14 hours of wrestling goodness that weekend, I get to see a lot of YOU Rival Angels readers there too and it’s always a blast.

One of the great workers is Leva Bates. She’s one half of the tag team Regeneration-X with Allison Danger and they outfit themselves in various superhero or pop culture icons like Dr. Who, or Marty McFly. Leva in particular will dress up as superheroes like Punisher, Captain America or Iron Man. Rival Angels reader and buddy

Joe commissioned me last year to draw a picture of Regeneration-X as Black Canary and Huntress, which obviously was a no-brainer. Wrestling girls and superheroines? What’s not to love? Well, Joe showed this commission to Leva who loved it and told me so at the SHIMMER after party last fall. We got to talking and it came up that the only Avenger she hadn’t been was Hawkeye.

Fast forward a couple of seasons and I decided to do some trading cards (which I’ll save for another post) but one of them was Leva as, you guessed it, Hawkeye. It neveroccurred to me for an instant that she’d dress up as Hawkeye for the show, and when I came to drop off the trading cards before the show, I had a chance to speak with Leva and Allison. They both really dug the trading cards I had done of them and I mentioned to Leva about our prior conversation about her being Hawkeye.

Allison turned to Leva and said, “Wow you really should dress up as Hawkeye in the future,” and talked about how she was going to see the Avengers movie when it came out. So, I deduced that whatever they’d dress up as, it wouldn’t see Leva as Hawkeye. Later on, I saw her come out…

I completely marked out. Nevermind the fact that I’ve always loved Hawkeye (West Coast Avengers was the second title I started collecting, after Spider-Man), but I didn’t expect her to come out as Hawkeye. My mind was completely blown. Totally cool. Leva was fighting Sara Del Rey, the Queen of Wrestling and all around world-beater. During the match, Sara turned to the crowd and yelled, ‘Hawkeye is the worst Avenger,’ to which the crowd, to my enjoyment, booed her roundly. The crowd also started yelling how, ‘No, Antman was the worst.” Or, “Yellowjacket was the worst.” Like a man holding on to a life raft, I tried as hard as I could not to join in the geeky, but I ended up yelling, ‘they were the same guy!’

Wrestling and comics….does it get any better? Think about going to a SHIMMER show, eh?

Thanks Leva and SHIMMER for an amazing weekend.

SHIMMER Weekend

This weekend is SHIMMER, the premiere women’s wrestling company in the Untied States. They have the greatest talent, the most entertaining characters and the most fantastic matches. Really great stuff and I’m happy to say that I’ll be there with some free swag for the crowd!

In anticipation for this weekend, I started doing some trading card art that I hope to bring Saturday of some of my favorite wrestlers. Obviously, I have more favorites than just here (I am just one guy) but it’s a good start.

Fearless

As you might have noticed lately, I’ve been trying to blog on off days with certain goings ons. I know most of you are here for the girl wrestling drama but I know some of you are here because you like me or you like my art. Touching on both points, I’d like to share with you a table top role-playing game I’ve been playing lately, DC adventures.

Yep, it’s the DC comics universe that houses Batman, Wonder Woman, Black Adam and Saturn Girl though me and my friends are all created characters. The game mechanics are a hybrid of D20 and the Mutant and Masterminds rules. I personally think the D20 system is probably one of the best RPG systems ever invented. I’ve not played D&D 4th ed, or even Pathfinder/D&D 3.5 and have heard good things, but I can’t speak to that, but I’ve played a ton of other systems including Palladium, GURPS, the original DC RPG, Marvel Super-heroes, Shadowrun, Vampire, Twilight 2000, Star Wars (both versions), etc. So, I’ve been around a few systems. I have to admit though, that when I first started, I was a little lost. My Gamemaster recently had us reverse engineer our characters to make sure they were accurate. This exercise cinched it for me, and there isn’t any confusion anymore and I’m positive that it’s a good fit for casual or hardcore gamers.

The setting is our Earth (DC comics universe-Earth), and in the fictional city of Grand City. I’d like to introduce you to my character, Jake Story. He grew up in Grand City and at an early age was bitten (figuratively) for a desire to get out of his hometown. A football scholarship helped him get out, but a coach’s ethics scandal kept potential recruiters away. Jake started working in the theatre and while he wouldn’t be the bard in summer stock, he’d learned enough to be a solid actor, and with a knack for physicality which lead to his current profession: Stunt man!

His latest movie gig took him back to Grand City and found he hadn’t missed it. Like a forgotten museum display, nothing changed. Jake was different though. He had flight, super-strength, regeneration, impervious skin and few other power stunts that usually involve destroying the nearby environment. (Hint: Names like, ‘Thunderclap,’ ‘Groundstrike,’ and ‘Shockwave.’ ) He also had a super-hero name to go along with his new superness: FEARLESS.

Things change, and events unfolded over the next few months to not only develop a fierce protectiveness for the city, but also bring out a hardened sense of responsibility. And, there’s a girl too. Isn’t there always?

More next time!
