Looking back on Season 1
Anyone who has spent any time here knows that Rival Angels is a labor of love. 618 updates in a row and counting proves that. I’ve been creating comic books on and off since 2000 with my Worldwide Solutions stories as the main focus. By 2006, I was unhappy with the comic scene (lots of D-bags claiming to be my friend), my art was garbage and I didn’t want to keep spinning my wheels. I started hearing about this ‘webcomic’ thing and it really appealed to me but I knew I wanted to do something unique.
I started watching wrestling in 1986 and one of my earliest memories was of Sting beating Ric Flair for the NWA heavyweight title. That was a good one, but I have some others too, like when the MegaPowers broke up in Milwaukee (I was there). Naturally, some of my favorite wrestlers have been Sting, Ricky Steamboat, Arn Anderson, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Rock, Nash, HBK, Macho Man, CM Punk and I have appreciation for the vets. Of course, I have also been fan of Wendi Richter, Velvet Mcintyre, Sheri Martel, Medusa Michelli, Akira Hokato, and after discovering SHIMMER, this includes Nicole Matthews, Jessie McKay, Tennile, The Knight Dynasty, Leva Bates, December and my forever mark-out favorite, Cheerleader Melissa.
Right, so I wanted to do something unique in comics and it hit me rather suddenly that there wasn’t any wrestling webcomics and only a few wrestling comic books like Whoa, Nellie and Headlocked. So, in 2007 I decided I would combine my two great loves of wrestling and comics and also give the world something it needed. I wrote the first 20 pages the day that the last Harry Potter book came out. I remember because Tracie was working and didn’t want to miss it for anything, so I wrote those pages in the front room and Rival Angels was born and on January 1, 2008, it went live to the world, nay, the universe!
Since then, my artwork has grown in leaps and bounds as well as myself as a person. I’ve met some really great people in the industry who I consider dear friends of mine and always happy to see them. And I’ve also gotten to know some of YOU, my fair readers. We’ve met at comic conventions, Anime shows, and even wrestling shows! Some of you have been around since the beginning and even some who’ve ‘only’ been around for a year or so, it’s been my very sincere pleasure to get to know every one of you. I think we have a pretty good time together. I don’t have the space for individual shout-outs but come on, you know who you are. Obviously, my vocal group, but also my silent readers and even readers who used to be vocal but can only stop in from time to time. Thanks for spending some of your day here.
Rival Angels is now listed on Amazon (US, UK, Australia), and Barnes and Noble and my commissions list always fills up before I can even post it during conventions. Rival Angels may never be the biggest webcomic in the world, and it may never get bigger than it is now, but it’s always going to be a lot of fun. And we’re the #1 Wrestling Webcomic. 🙂
People ask when do I take time off, and I tell them Christmas and my birthday, but this is a lie. I really love working on Rival Angels so why should I not work on those days? Well, I suppose I don’t work on Rival Angels on Tracie’s birthday or our wedding anniversary but even then I get to work it in sometimes.
So what can you expect from Rival Angels Season 2? You can expect to see our Upstart Girls grow into the women they’re going to become and the professional athletes they’re destined to evolve into. Outside of that, drama, intrigue, pain, humor, heartbreak, action and of course, friendship.
We’ve got the makings of a great time to be had by all. It’s a party. Are you in?

Get fired for something outside the ring? Well I would say it is because there are lawyers who would get her a big settlement.
Not really since it depends on the contract she signed and what rights the worker and company have in regards to termination. Considering Brooke is on, most likely, a rookie contract, there are probably myriads of outs for the company to release her.
The ‘How’ will be revealed. After all, Gabrielle is busy with Sabrina.
Either Gabrielle doesn’t care that her worst recent rookie acquisition was sleeping with one of her non-competition employees who should know better and lets it all go, or it’s still early and Katherine has no idea what’s about to happen to Brooke.
I think having Brooke in there ranks is good. She has a bad reputation and it is known she will do just about anthing so she will make a good choice to be the bad girl of the group.
Gabby knew about Brooke and Michael…I think since page 130 or so. Kat’s striking while the fire is hot but we don’t know what Brooke’s consequences are yet.
Didn’t say I suspect Gabrielle doesn’t know, Boney. I said I suspect she doesn’t care. Big difference. I know she knows, so after all this, why would she let such a trouble maker keep her job?

I have to say I’m disappointed… Brooke seemed to be ready to show some character growth and it’s all been tossed aside for her heel turn… wait, she was already a heel. Heelier turn? Anyway, it’s like she’s had a number of revelations dropped on her head and… she learns absolutely nothing and is now back to the brainless biatch she was in the beginning. *sigh* Well, presumably Albone has a plan going forward in this, so I won’t completely write her off yet.
We all need someone to hate in a story.
I look at it as two steps forward, two steps back but Brooke’s looking at this as a whole new start. Of course, what Gabrielle has in store for her might have rethink that.
Adon in any other situation I would be one to agree with you but I can actually see this as a development for Brooke. Her biggest achievement seems to be bullying and beating Rumble who was already an underdog. Not much hype for beating up a jobber regardless of how good you were in the match.
Joining with the Belles might actually give her a better chance to stand out and away from association with the Upstarts and develop more. Besides after a stunt like that I don’t even know if Krystin would still associate with her.
What Vixxen had told Brooke was true in a way, she was in the shadows of Sabrina, everyone else in the Upstarts were branching out and doing well where as she at most changed her outfit and name but relied on her looks for appeal and Amanda to back her and little on her skills at first.
But then again I could be assuming too much.
My only question is if there is any continuity to Brooke with her accent? When she came out as Aphrodite she had gone back to her Aussie accent but it’s mentioned here that it only seems to come out when she’s angry. So was it rediscovered, discovered then dropped, or just a sort of on-screen only thing. Suddenly I’d love to see her face off with a Kiwi for some reason.
There’s already a Kiwi on the roster, but she keeps ducking those she feels are not on her level. It’s as if…
…you can’t see her.
Ok, question here- how is it that Sabrina gets sent off to… somewhere… and Brooke, the instigator, gets her useless ass rescued from the mess she herself caused?
Because it was Sabrina that tossed Brooke into the cake and that was the main thing that the bride and groom saw.
In the NFL, it’s often the second person that throws the punch that get the penalty. I know that Brooke looks like she came out in the end over Sabrina, but time will tell on that.

I’m pretty sure that it’s Kat doing the recruiting here, with the vacancy being Chloe. If you check back on page 616, Kat looks rather amused by the whole fight, and Chloe wasn’t even <i>at</i> the wedding.

It’s true, Brooke has been invited into Hell’s Belles, something that she’s wanted since page 28 or so. Now that Chloe is gone, will the Belles look for others to recruit?

No surprise here. Like I said a slap on the wrist. Now I’m really worried about Sabrina. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that Brooke, who started the whole fight will get off free, while Sabrina is sent to God knows where as a punishment. Am I the only one who thinks Gabby can easily pass off as Vince McMahon’s niece for something?
Again, you’re overlooking the VERY OBVIOUS factor of Gabrielle going to great lengths to see Sabrina off personally. Sabrina is bummed about circumstances, but she’s definitely not getting screwed over.
She is off to Japan. It is the only place that makes sense. Maybe she can make commericals while she is there!

Great ending to Season 1!
I speculated on this a while back, on the forum. I still don’t really get it. It’s ideal, from Brooke’s perspective, but Brooke still doesn’t have much to offer Hell’s Belles. She has a few things in common with Chloe – they’re both blonde, hate Sabrina, have entitlement and impulse control issues and funny accents… In the end, though, they lost a main event wrestler and replaced her with an opening act. Hell’s Belles has fallen on hard times indeed.
Really, unless they’ve got a plan to put Brooke through crazy physical, technical, and behavioral conditioning, I don’t see how she makes the cut. Even Brooke’s character destroys whatever pretense of exclusivity they still bothered to maintain. Will Brooke go through another character change, like so many young wrestlers trying to find their niche? (Yes, please – “Aphrodite” is awful.)
This happening right after the brawl with Sabrina is interesting. It really looks like the Belles are becoming the Anti-Ultragirl Coalition. Sort of trivializes them. We’ll see what they do, though.
Despite my reservations, I love this turn of events, because I can’t help but picture Chloe’s reaction when she tunes in and finds out that Kat has replaced CHLOE DE SADE with a talentless Aussie slut. Priceless!
Thanks Blitz! Brooke’s appeal is at an all time high…for certain parties. I mean, is she Damage Inc material? Would Yvonne want that kind of attention? But Kat who’s the new leader of the Belles might find this sort of heat beneficial. What kind of doors does this kind of heat open? Of course, Gabrielle hasn’t had her say yet. And What Would Chloe Do when she finds out?

And Tracie too, I know she’s the rock that Rival Angels stands on–she’s the support and cheerleader who’s given you the freedom to pursue this as hard and with as much passion and devotion as you have.

Heh, heh – it’s not Hells Bells on that plate, it’s Hells Balls – all the ladies used to be men. ‘Course, Brooke screws that up.
Anyway, congratulations on finishing Season 1 – and nobody died!
Oh – scary thought – what if Chloe has joined the same wrestling league as Sabrina just got shipped to? They could become BFF’s! (that would be Bitter Feuding Females).
Oh, hahahahaha….pfft, Chloe in the same wrestling league that Sabrina is sent to? It’s good, but kind of reaching. I mean, she might have mandatory Peace Corp work or something. 😛
Sabrina is wildly popular, has defeated a top main-eventer, and has shown talent to be a credible challenge to title holders.
Brooke has little to bring, but boobage and attitude, sleeps around (including to get to the top division) and instigates conflict wherever she shows up.
Sabrina gets exiled, and Brooke gets to stay, and become a part of a Power Stable.

I think you summed it up very well, but that’s only half the tale. More to come on that, and I’m glad that you do see that this is certainly not balanced at all.
No, I don’t get it. You can attack someone in an alley, cause her injury, and instead of ending up in prison keep your job (hell’s belles are still in rival angels? really?), but you can’t defend yourself against a nutcase attacking you (who is also not fired) without paying?
I’m completely with you on this. It’s very unfair, especially with what we know. More on this as it unfolds.
First off, congratulations Albone-san! It’s been a great run and I’ve really enjoyed reading and contributing my small share of the community silliness. I am definitely looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.
As for Brooke, yeah I can agree that it’s not fair that Brooke’s not been canned or severely punished, but two points on that. 1) This is pro wrestling, what does fair have to do with it? 2) This is just the part we’re seeing, there’s plenty of time yet for La Commish to drop the sanctions on Brooke’s head. I don’t know that that’ll actually happen, but I do expect the Inflatable Australian to spend some time in the Hell’s Belles’ Training Hell, getting hazed and hardened at the hands of Kat Smith. I would like/have liked to see Kat take on a more upward tone without Chloe around, but that seems to not be the case. We’ll see. In the meantime, Sabrina’s off to the Strappy Italian Boot Factory, and Brooke still being around means that she can be Revenge Chow when Sabrina gets back. Let’s change her gimmick, anyone for Brooke “Mid-Boss” Lennox? 😉
Cookie Ogre, I’ve always thought that we need a new definition for the word ‘fair.’ And very good on what we’re seeing and what’s going to happen. I mean, it’s still wide open for Sabrina and Brooke. Will their paths mirror each other, or go in completely different directions. LOL @ Mid-boss!
Long time lurker/reader, first time poster.
I must say, this was a heck of a ride, and it seems to get even more hectic. I’m looking forward to Brooke’s evolution, cause I recall an earlier comic where the Commish commented on Brooke’s potential if she got her mind on wrestling (I think Brooke came within an eyelash of being fired).
Brooke has all the makings of a classic heel. Locker room hates her (like HHH, Honkey Tonk Man, Ted Dibiase Sr), surrounded by a heel stable who will teach her the ropes (I fear for Kat. She’s in over her head if she doesn’t expect Brooke to perform a coup at some point), and the ‘one thing’ you folks are forgetting:
Brooke is devious. Not too bright, but devious. Remember the Amanda Breaker swerve? The referee affair? Heck, even her sleeping around takes at least some bit of on the spot planning.
And one final reminder. There was once a wrestler who had a stupid gimmick. He was considered one dimensional, boring, and when he was recruited into a stable, people saw it as a contrived attempt to get people to like him. This man would later become one of the most dastardly hated heel in the company he was in (in a good way!).
That man, was the Rock, and I won’t be surprised if, by the end of season three or mid-season four, Brooke emerges as the new leader of Hells Belles, possibly in the midst of a huge path of destruction…
…with our little Sabrina the only woman who has a prayer of stopping her.
Welcome, Joshie, welcome! I see you have a great appreciation for wrestling and its subtitlies. Not too bright but devious is plenty dangerous and now that she’s in Hell’s Belles, who knows what’s going to happen. And yes, The Rock experienced one of the most memorable transformations ever. I’m definitely a mark.

and i have to say isn;t it great to see how hard work, determination, an undying will to go the extra mile to get what you want pays off as Brooke FINALLY gets to live out her long time dream of joining Hell’s Belles. ;P
i think it’s actually a decent move. The Belles gain an “in” with management via the Michael/Brooke connection and another power wrestler for the stable. PLus Kat gets a bit more backup for her TV Title defenses as she must realize tat Jen’s not the most intimidating person on the roster. I wouldn;t be surprised to see them bring in Amanda as well. What’s the roster going to do when they find Kat,Brooke and Amanda all staring down at them (with Jen making smart alecky remarks while jumping up and down in order to be seen behind those big gals)?
Brooke gets to live out her dream, gets protection from any anti-Brina being gone and Brooke’s still here heat, and moves herself up the roster ranks by joining one of the big two factions after seeing how it has benefited Sun.
Thanks jpiv! You are right in thinking that Kat’s motivations are based in anything but for selfish reasons, but what are those? Your Hell’s Belles linup sounds pretty bad ass. Are they a match for Damage Inc? O_o
This seems a particularly good plot development. Brooke has enough motivation to be a good villainess, and if she actually gets the training and gets off her ass enough to learn how to wrestle, she could be a convincing Big Bad (sorry, Joss Whedon!) to be the negative lynchpin for the next season. We always knew you had it in ya, Brooke! Looking forward to it.

The fact that gabrielle sent her off personally and said “don’t look at this as punishment” means she’s probably not toasted. We’ve seen gab flat out get rid of two people who pissed her off, and by get rid off I mean fire or threaten with firing. Sabrina is getting sent somewhere else. Where, we don’t know. Now, here’s my thought, if I might guess at Gab’s mindset.
Sabrina is a cash cow. If you remember, during the PPV special her merchandise was selling out. That’s not the kind of person you get rid of if they’re achieving that in their rookie year. This same cash cow however, has been attacked several times out of ring by people jealous of her success, and as such, there’s a good chance she’s gonna get taken out of comission, as she almost was in the alley, or she’s gonna do something even stupider than a cake toss as a result of self defense.
If you’ve got a prize stallion that runs great, has the potential to be a winner, but all the others in the stable attack it, do you keep it around them? No, you send it off to train without any of the distractions and hinderances. If Sabrina rocks the circuit wherever she’s headed off to, when she finally comes back she’ll have cred, as well as one hell of a sellout show for the big return of mancini…especially if it’s against one of her rivals.
Al do we have to RVSP for the party? also as the saying goes if you do somthing you love its never work so its safe to say you never work i cant wait for season2 to start I look forward to the sophmore hijinx

Thanks for the history lesson, Joshie! You’ve got a good point. Is Brooke “Aphrodite” Lennox the new Rocky Maivia? I have a hard time, right now, believing I could ever be a Brooke fan, but I gotta admit, that’d be pretty cool. Right now, though, she may be devious, but she’s entirely ineffectual. All her plotting has achieved is to draw negative attention from the boss, and get herself beaten badly. Bad plotter, bad wrestler… the Belles have their work cut out for them, whipping Brooke into shape.
Snowy, Japan is the only place that makes sense because we don’t have all the details. To me, Japan doesn’t make sense, because Sun’s already been there, and a) it doesn’t make any sense from a story perspective to have Sabrina follow Sun’s footsteps at this point, and b) she didn’t ask Sun for any tips.
Yeah, I didn’t say she was a ‘good’ plotter. But remember, potential. Kat has been under DeSade for a while now, so I’m sure she has a good bag of mind games she can pass down to Brooke.
My guess is that Sabrina was bumped down to another developmental league (like WWE has FCW). It’s the only thing I can think of that can be misinterpreted as a punishment, but is an opportunity. I agree that Japan is a bit of a stretch, otherwise, the letter to Sun would’ve been a bit more specific.
Speaking of Sun, though…

Brilliant placement of the speech bubble, where it’s hidden behind the obvious attention grabber (the license plate). Looks like Damage INC is allying themselves with the Belles… or Damage INC has a rooster in the hen house. Either way, Sun better watch out, being Brina’s friend and all.
Also, I have a gut feeling that it’s not Kat speaking to Brooke. It’s not only too obvious… but the way the face is masked… it’s almost as if it’s a mystery person, thus once again, Kat is too obvious.
My vote goes to either Widow (just because she’s fired doesn’t mean she’s harmless. This is pro wrestling we’re talking about), The Champ (who else would you think is ‘elite’ enough to gather the belles back together? Definitely not Kat) or Gabby herself (remember how she went ‘Vince McMahon’ on DefTech? Scouting her out, perhaps?). I don’t know, but even when she is ready to fire someone, she seems too… goody goody. Almost as if she’s ready for a heel turn any second now.
But again, I may be thinking too much into things (which shows just how well this story has been plotted. Lots of fodder that can be used for misdirection).
That Traitor, I can tell this will not end well for Brooke in the upcoming season. ;(
Even with Kat Jenn, Amanda and Brooke Belles won’t be a match for Damage inc, why because Yvonne is smart and will have a back up plan to the back up plan. I can also see once she gets back Sabrina joining Damage inc, would be interesting at least, and we know Yvonne has more respect from the locker room than Kat Smith does. Damage Inc maybe heels but they are smarter heels than Helle’s belle’s.
Ah, and Brooke joins hells bells. Kat has her training cut out for her. I mean she has some moves, but need we forget she couldn’t pass a drug test without cheating, meaning she may have some ‘juice’ helping her keep that strength going. Then you have Jennifer, which I haven’t seen anything decent with her wrestling. Now you get Brooke joining, and I mean she gets some sub par okay moves. I mean even with all of them ganging up on the other wrestlers she needs some more good moves. I would enjoy seeing her development. As for Gabrielle, I know she has the plans of what will be most profitable, but also what will drive them to be better. Proven with her encouragement towards Krystin. I have faith that whatever it is it will be fantastic for Sabrina. I’m quite positive she will make a good come back at a main event and also stay in the public eye. I’ll be glad to see more development in Krystin. She has the talent but just not the faith in herself it seems. With Brooke joining hells bells, who else is looking forward to hells bells vs damage inc.? I’ve really enjoyed reading this and will continue to enjoy the new directions. Never a dull moment, always fun guessing what’s next. The Champ, and the Cat girls. Cookie Ogres sweet delights. Love every bit of it. Congrats and thanks for breaking up long work days!

Ah the hero cycle, bad things must happen to good characters into order for them to become stronger and Heroric. It usually the opposite for the villains who see quick rewards for their deeds, but suffer the greatest fall in the end, Brooke is gonna have a doozy of a fall to come hopefully.
